SEDAA is proud to be part of the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt's Love Your Tree Campaign. We will be conducting a workshop on November 22nd at Richard Montgomery High School, however if you are unable to attend, we still encourage you to submit a poster entry!
What is LYT?
Love Your Tree (LYT) is a creative arts campaign designed to help students develop positive body image, improved self-esteem and enhanced media literacy skills, all of which can serve as protective factors against the development of eating disorders.
Top 5 reasons for participating
- 30% of Maryland youth report being teased and bullied because of their weight or size. LYT is an opportunity to open school-wide conversations about compassion and acceptance of differences in self and others. These messages are well-suited to support broader school and community goals such as decreasing bullying and increasing school connectedness Incredible, stunning, inspiring artwork and very proud, empowered student artists.
- LYT is an awesome opportunity for student artists to make connections in the greater community and gain experience showing their artwork outside of the school setting. Submitted posters go on display each year in the official Love Your Tree exhibit in Towson, Maryland and in online galleries at LoveYourTree.org.
- The harsh reality of middle school, high school and college is such that a lot of time is spent focusing on, criticizing and attempting to change one’s body. LYT presents a fun, creative and engaging way to support critical thinking around toxic cultural messages about beauty and self-worth. For many students, this may be the only time they are invited to celebrate their bodies instead of encouraged to critique and alter them.

“Eve, look at that tree? Do you see that tree? Now, look at that tree (pointing to another one). Do you like that tree? Do you hate that tree ’cause it doesn’t look like that tree? Do you say that tree isn’t pretty cause it doesn’t look like that tree? We’re all trees. You’re a tree. I’m a tree. You’ve got to love your body, Eve. You’ve got to love your tree.”
- Excerpt from The Good Body, 2004 by Eve Ensler
