In today’s society, the growing influence of social media and other societal pressures have caused many people, particularly teenagers, to develop unrealistic and unhealthy body standards. Even at age 10, the majority of girls are insecure about their bodies and are afraid of being “fat”. 50% of teenage girls and 30% of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives to control their weight.
SEDAA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on fundraising for eating disorders treatment and research, as well as educating and promoting engagement throughout the community. We strive toward creating a unified movement of students who recognize the importance of fighting against these increasingly prevalent illnesses and rectifying the misconceptions associated with them.
To accomplish this mission, we conduct workshops and seminars at local schools, participate in and organize community events, and have created a social media campaign to spread awareness of this pressing issue. The money we raise goes toward funding these events or is donated to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), an organization that helps raise awareness and funds research for eating disorders and support victims and their families.
